Wanda Beck Skinner of Morton Valley, began collecting family information from Eastland County residents. These family records were compiled and organized at the Eastland Centennial Memorial Library into the Eastland County Genealogy Room. Wanda, along with many different volunteers, continued working the room adding records, genealogy books, computers and other research items, as well as helping visitors with their family research. Funding was mostly from her and the volunteer’s own pockets. Later donations and small grants helped.
The records today consist of many files and volumes of family created histories, county related obituaries from the late 1800’s to today, local and area high school and college yearbooks, county cemetery records and much, MUCH more!
In 2022 Eastland Centennial Memorial Library was planning a major renovation of wanted to use the genealogy space and approached the Eastland County Museum with the idea of transferring the records to that entity. The Museum was thrilled with the idea and the records were moved to what is now the Genealogy Room there. After renovating space and organizing the records (an on-going project!) the room opened in late 2024 with local Ranger genealogist Nelda Rodgers assisting.
The ”Gen Room” as the Museum calls it, will have computer and internet access for research, as well as the digitization of all records over time. Future plans also will allow for a digitization service of family photos and records offered to the public.
The “Gen Room” is open during regular Museum hours of 10-2 on Thursdays – Saturdays. Stop in and let Nelda assist you with your family research. For family information requests you can reach her via email at eastlandcountygenealogy@gmail.com.
